Is the Crockery Kraken related to the Kraken of myth?

The Crockery Kraken has been around a long time. But of course, the Kraken of Greek mythology has been around even longer. Are they related?

At first glance, the answer would be: Of course! But closer examination reveals more differences than similarities. The Crockery Kraken (CK) is many times smaller than the Kraken (K). In fact, he's relatively tiny, having to navigate the pipes around people's homes.

There's also the question of temperament. K was known as a force of great destruction, levelling entire communities and being a terror to all ocean-going vessels.

CK is actually rather a mild creature - known to love clean dishes and a tidy kitchen, and even generous to the point of actually granting wishes.

But clearly, there is a connection, and it's more than the simple connection that all cephalopods share. These are both magical cephalopods and that is not a common occurrence - definitely not a coincidence.

But how to find out more? Both CK and K are shrouded in the kind of mystery that is common to all creatures that are a mixture of the mythological and scientific. Separating fact from fiction was going to be difficult, if not impossible.

I called the Museum of Natural History and was surprised to discover that they did not have a Kraken expert on staff, much less a professor of Crockery Krakenology. Disappointing, but I was not to be dissuaded.

I will update this blog with more information on my search for K and CK connections in future posts.
